In the ancient Upanishads and the Vedas - the Rigveda, the Yajurveda, the Samaveda and the Atharvaveda, one can find numerous mantras that are dedicated solely to peace. Peace that is all encompassing and all-pervading. These are the Shantimantras. Each one of these Shantimantras end with the refrain, OM ! Shanti ! Shanti ! Shanti !
Peace is invoked thrice to attain peace on three levels :
The Adhyatmika Peace - Peace that is sought on the mental and physical level that protects our mental and physical well-being.The Adhibhautika Peace - Peace with the five elements, earth, water, fire, air and ether.
The Adhidaivika Peace - Peace that protects us from the fury of the Gods.
One cannot help but wonder at the foresight and wisdom of the sages that inspired them to write mantras such as these more than 5000 years ago, which are so relevant in today's times. Thus this Vedic invocation of peace gains great contemporary significance.
Let us introspect and resolve to give our best to restore harmony and peace around us.
