Yantra Audio Title

Yantra – Pandit Bhimsen Joshi

The word Yantra, literally meaning mystical diagram, is also associated with Indian yog traditions and esoteric practices of varied religions like Tantra.

In this album, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi sings the Yantra ‘Vitthal Vitthal’ in the form of a continuous chant, clearing the path for entering an enlighted world. He reveres Lord Panduranga, the Vitthal of Pandhari. Vitthal is the bestower of auspiciousness, enchanter of the heart and supporter of those afflicted and unhappy.

Acknowledged as the leading light of the Kirana Gharana, Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi is a sheer musical marvel whose singing invariably provides listeners with a divine musical experience. Born in 1922 into a conservative Brahimin family in Gadag, Karnataka, Bhimsen Joshi displayed the signs of a musical genius from an early age. He ran away from home and started learning music at the age of 11 against his father’s wishes. But when his father become aware of Bhimsen’s talent in singing and his fervent talent in singing and his desire for knowledge in music, he made arrangements for him to learn under the guidance of Sawai Gandharva of Kundol, a pupil of Abdul Karim Khan.

He has been honored with numerous awards and titles such a Padma Shree and Padma Bhushan by the Government of India and the Sangeet Natak Akademi award amongst others.
